Computer programming is the process of writing, testing, and maintaining the source code of computer programs.
The source code is written in a programming language. This code may be a modification of existing source or something completely new, the purpose being to create a program that exhibits the desired behavior.
Programmers make sure that the computer application meets the needs of the users of the computer system
They assist systems analysts and designers in researching and documenting computer users' requirements
They prepare documentation for other programmers, users of the system and other support services workers
They modify and document program code to correct errors or to enhance a program's capabilities as well as test the programs and make amendments.
The process of writing source code requires expertise in many different subjects, including knowledge of the application domain, specialized algorithms, and formal logic
Good programming is generally considered to be the measured application of all three: expert knowledge informing an elegant, efficient, and maintainable software solution
Programmers may specialise as an Analyst Programmer, Communications Programmer (Systems), Database Programmer (Systems), Games Programmer, Multimedia Programmer, Network Programmer or a Systems Software Programmer
