• Duties include preventative maintenance; break down repairs, and installation of all types of air conditioners and refrigeration equipment.
• This work requires knowledge of principles of air conditioning, the ability to recognize and determine the best method for correcting malfunctions, and the skill to make repairs to a variety of air conditioning and cooling unit systems.
• This may include the operation of air conditioning systems for large buildings or complexes of buildings.
• Also included are jobs that involve the operation and regulation of cold storage and specialized climate simulation facilities.
• The work requires the ability to adjust equipment for maintaining desired temperatures and humidity; start, operate, and stop the air handling equipment and centrifugal compressors or absorbers; and detect and diagnose malfunctions in equipment.
• Operators must know the purposes and locations of all equipment in the systems and the auxiliary equipment (cooling towers, water pumps, air compressors, liquid circulating pumps, fans, etc.).
• Refrigeration and air-conditioning mechanics assemble, install, service and repair industrial, commercial and domestic refrigeration and air-conditioning systems in homes, shops, factories, office buildings and hospitals.
• Will works from blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, and other plans and specifications in order to independently construct, assemble, and install refrigeration equipment.
• They will need to follow plans and specifications to install units part by part and bolt them down
• They will be required to drill holes, install mounting brackets and cut, bend and thread piping
• Install parts such as compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, air filters, switches and gauges, and copper lines for steam, gas, refrigerant, compressed air, fuel, oil and chilled water
• attach piping to refrigeration systems and work with electricians, pipe fitters and carpenters to install ducting for air-conditioning
• They will be required to test the unit and make adjustments to make sure that it works correctly
• Finally they may need to service faulty industrial and household refrigerators and air-conditioning units by repairing or replacing faulty parts.
