  • Police officers protect the lives and property of citizens.
  • They maintain order, catch lawbreakers, and work to prevent crimes. In small towns they perform many duties. Larger cities have a more structured division of responsibility.
  • Police officers may patrol the streets on foot or in squad cars; control traffic; or work as detectives investigating crimes.
  • At the police station officers may be assigned to work in the crime laboratory or the records department. All officers file reports of incidents, and many testify at trials and hearings.
  • FBI, Scotland Yard and Interpol, and combat international crime by providing information important to the detection of international criminal activity affecting Australia
  • Prison officers are responsible for the custody, care and supervision of inmates in prisons and correctional centres.
  • They may search inmates and cells for illegal articles, drugs, valuables and weapons
  • maintain control, discipline and security within the correctional centre and supervise inmates.
  • patrol assigned areas and report to superiors or other workers any breach of rules, unsatisfactory attitudes or adjustment problems of inmates
  • guard inmates in transit between correctional centres and court rooms, police lockups or other institutions
  • help offenders to seek rehabilitation and return to the community by providing basic counselling and supervision.
