Bricklaying & Stonemasonry

  • A bricklayer is a tradesman who lays bricks to construct brickwork.
  • Tradesman typically begins in an apprenticeship, working for and learning from a master craftsman.
  • The common materials are brick, stone, concrete block, glass block, and tile. Bricklaying is a highly durable form of construction because the materials used are not much affected by the elements, but the quality of the mortar and the pattern the units are laid in can strongly affect the quality of the overall construction.
  • To build a brick wall, bricklayers construct the corners of the wall first. Then they stretch string from one corner of the wall to the other. This line is usually called a gauge or course line. It is used as a guide so that the bricklayers build the wall straight.
