- Driving instructors teach individuals and groups the theory and practical application of driving skills.
- They instruct students to drive a motor vehicle by teaching them how to steer, change gears (if manual), interpret and understand traffic conditions, reverse, park, and understand mechanical components and functions
- They teach road traffic regulations and advise students when they are ready for assessment
- Some instructors with special licences teach people to drive buses and rigid or articulated vehicles.
- They tailor lessons to each student's ability, explaining and demonstrating specific driving techniques.
- They teach vehicle handling in different road and weather conditions and how to respond to road hazards or potentially dangerous situations.
- Their job also involves updating and maintaining client records and, when students are considered ready, putting them forward for driving examinations.
