Graeme Cowan

Graeme's early career was spent in Marketing Management with Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson. He then joined Morgan and Banks and worked in recruitment and outplacement, before finally leading their change management division. In 1998 he joined AT Kearney Executive Search and became the Joint Managing Director.

Between 2000-2005 Graeme went through a severe bout of depression which his psychiatrist described as the worst he had treated. During his worst times Graeme yearned for real life stories of people who had been through what was happening to him and came out the other side.

In June 2007, John Brogden launched his book “BACK FROM THE BRINK: Australians tell their story of overcoming depression” which quickly became a bestseller. He now speaks, writes, and consults on overcoming depression.

1.     What was your first job?
My first job was working at night in a bakery. It was my challenge to put the bread into the slicer. It didn’t last very long as I was unable to handle the shift work.

2.      What did you want to be when you grew up?
My dream was to be a Park Ranger. A good friend’s father worked for National Park’s and often took us into the bush for school holidays. I couldn’t believe he got paid for having so much fun.

3.      What does your job involve now?
My early career was spent in marketing and my mid career in human resources. Having written my book - “Back from the Brink” - about Australians overcoming depression – I have entered my 3rd phase which involves speaking, writing, and consulting on how to overcome depression. The interesting thing is that this role involves using all the skills I acquired in my earlier career.

4.      Are you thinking of trying your hand in anything else
I am doing more keynote speaking on turning adversity into opportunity which I am really enjoying.
I am also very keen to utilize the internet to spread my message of hope through the development of online courses and resources to help people overcome depression.

5.      What is the biggest challenge you face at work?
Working out what to do myself and what to outsource.

6.      What is the best part of your job?
I love the variety my job entails. Every day is different and I get a real buzz when I get emails from people saying my work has made a difference in their lives.

7.      What is your advice for people starting out in your industry?

Never stop learning and being aware of changes in the industry that will impact your role. It is always good to be one step ahead.

8.      What makes you happy?
My meditation and walk in the bush every morning. My family and friends and my work. I am also fortunate enough to travel a lot and really enjoy that.
